We were on the road really early today, getting up at 5am and leaving at about 6.15am. We're in the middle of q heatwave with temperatures peaking at about 40 degrees. It's often still 27 degrees at about 8pm which is bedtime when you're aiming to ride as early as possible! We're aiming to be done with riding by about 11am, very latest 12. But we made it to Kansas today yay! I thought Kansas was supposed to be flat, but we had a bit of a climb just to get to this sign!
We're staying in Fort Scott tonight which has a very small national park area. It's the Fort buildings which guarded the border between the native Indians and the settlers. They had an art exhibition in one of the buildings too. If you look closely at the pics, you might be able to make out that they're all done with bits of coloured duct tape!
Staying with Warmshowers host tonight. It a bed and breakfast place as well as having a cafe and bar. It's a bit diffetdifferent to the normal Warmshowers places who are usually interested in your trip. I never actually spoke to the host, I get the impression that they own a lot of the businesses in town and figure that if you stay they will get some money off you somewhere! Still, it was a beautiful place and I got to sleep with air-conditioning so I'm happy.
And I wasn't paying attention today, hit 2000 miles and didn't even notice it! we're still off trail at the moment but should be back on the official route tomorrow.
