Decided to head off trail today. The choices were either to stick to the TransAm and go through the Ozarks which are STEEP, or head off route and take KATY trail. It's an extra 160 miles to do the KATY trail, bit it's a "rails to trail" so it's flat, pretty and car free. No contest! Our route there provided more excitement than expected though! Thanks Google navigation!
