20.3miles (pitiful!) /115 total
Knew that I had to get going early due to how much checking my phone to make sure I'm still enroute slows me down. Plus I wanted to get the few miles down route 1 done before it got busy. It was only slightly drizzling so put on red windproof so I was more visible. All going well until very slowly, the drizzle became proper rain, and I was soaked and cold before I really realised it. Found out that when hands are wet, it's impossible to get them into my waterproof warm gloves, hmmm.
So, cold, wet and knowing I had a few more busy roads before I got to my intended campsite, I decided at Fredericksburg to get a hotel. At 11am, after only 20miles.
If it had been cold and wet on small roads, or warm and busy roads, I think I'd have toughed it out. But the hotel gives me the oppurtunity to figure out a route using smaller roads and print the maps. Will have a shortish day tomorrow only going the 20 or so miles to my intended camp for tonight. From there, the roads should all be a lot smaller and the weather looks better.
Trying not to beat myself up about cutting today short, I always knew the bit down to the start of the TransAm would be hard and knew in the back of my mind that I may need to change plans to make it.
A few lessons learned today.
