I had to decide whether to take the road of death to the south of the lake or the trail to the north. At 7am, the traffic already sounded heavy so decided on the trail. It started so well! Like a German cycle path! It then quickly went downhill. For the most part it was fine, just a bit rocky with some big roots across the trail. The was a good section that was unrideable though. Big rocks, and slidy sections where the consequences would be sliding down the steep bank and the bike sinking to the bottom of the lake. So I pushed the bike through these sections. Where it was particularly steep and rocky, I had to take the bags separately then push the bike up afterwards. It was fun though. But i very much doubt the couple at the Hoh Rainforest who told me about the trail, who were on road bikes, had actually taken it.
Turned out that couple gave me another bad steer. They told me they took a ferry from the San Juan Islands to Port Angeles. So when I got into PA, I booked into the hostel and started looking for the ferry. Turns out, it sails from Port Townsend, 50 miles away, which is only a days ride from Anacortes. The Anacortes ferry is dirt cheap, the PT ferry is whale watching ferry and way expensive. So, I wished I'd pushed on further, but, I had a bunk in a nice hostel, so all good.
I went for a ride around Port Angeles, and passed a brew pub that also served hand made pizzas. Couldn't pass that one up!
